English Hariklia Hari (b. 1970, Athens, Greece) studied architecture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and “Digital Forms of Art” at the Inter-Departmental Postgraduate Course at the Athens School of Fine Arts. Since 1995 she has been working as an architect, urbanist and curator. Between 2003-2006 she was member of the editorial staff of the Greek Architectural Magazine Architektones. In 2005 she co-founded PPC_T/ Farkadona Lab working on the initiation of ideas and practices that enhance the process of auto-organization and the notion of the community as space of production and transformation. In 2012 she founded Nonplan, a research lab for combining architectural, artistic and social design concepts, practices and methods.
Her personal work is focused on the transformations of specific socio-geographic environments. It can form a diary of personal and architectural self-knowledge (No.M.A.D-Non Metropolitan Areas Data, 2001-4), a critical approach to the modern idea of program through an analysis of a series of contemporary phenomena as seen in the Greek territory (PPC_T: Post Programmed City_Territory, 2002-2004), or a personal interaction with the “spirit of a site” (ongoing project Reveries du Promeneur Solitaire, 2009-).
Her collective work mainly focuses, through projects or exhibitions, on exploring possibilities of the combination of art/architecture with social practices referring to questions of participation, free knowledge, auto-organization, creating environmental design strategies, formatting autonomous zones and creating new ways of cultural production, distribution and activism that cross into real-life social situations and institutions. This can be seen at Paradigmata (co-curator for Greek Participation at the 9th Biennale of Architecture in Venice, 2004; Benaki Museum Athens, 2004), at PPC_T / Farkadona project (concept, project coordination, 2004-2011) and at Microgeographies project (concept, design, 2011-).
For more than one decade she has been constantly working on the idea of a museum open to the city: From the design of the architectural program and infrastructure of T.A.M.A. (Temporary Autonomous Museum for All- in collaboration with visual artist Maria Papadimitriou, 2001) to the creation of the Auto-organized Digital/Art & Crafts Lab in Farkadona-Greece (in collaboration with the local community of repatriated Greek-pontians, 2006). In 2007 the Digital/Art & Crafts Lab was expanded and it’s “twin” was created in a container at the entrance of the harbor of Thessaloniki at the context of the 1rst Art Biennale of Thessaloniki. At the moment she is working on the concept of a local auto-organized museum, in collaboration with the community of Keratea, Attica. The S.O.M.A. (BODY in Greek) is a collaborative project by the NonPlan Architectural Lab and the Association of Intellectual and Social Activity Kerateas “Xrisi Tomi”. It is an open, scattered structure that is temporarily hosted in Keratea, Attica. Meant as a pilot venture, it can be implemented in any area of a similar social and urban character. The project explores the concept of museums as ‘Commons’ and the possibilities of cultural and touristic development of the area through collaboration with the local community, associations and institutions that explore participatory solutions to contemporary design issues related to the Greek landscape.
Furthermore, this notion of mixture, openness and dispersion of cultural uses in the city can be seen at the selection of sites for the project Microgeographies I (2011), Microgeographies II: An Accidental Guide to Urban Commoning (2013) and Microgeographies III: Toi et Tes Epaves (ongoing): community auto-organized spaces, art spaces, abandoned buildings and various urban sites are used for site specific installations by artists, architects and local communities. In Microgeographies the interaction between topos and person is the structural element of the urban narrative.
She has participated in several urban actions with the architectural group Urban Void (1998-2009). She has participated in the recent projects of the artistic group Omada Filopappou (20011-). She has worked on gender issues, co-curating the feminine collective work Kiss from Greece (Galerie Nomad, Paris, 1998, Galerie edition Stalzer, Vienna, 1999 and Galerie Frederick Lock, Berlin, 2000).
